SCOP (Dependability, Communication, Optimization)

In a world where sys­tems inter­act with each oth­er in increas­ing­ly com­plex ways, SCOP’s research is in the design and opti­miza­tion of logis­tics sys­tems and net­worked sys­tems, togeth­er with safe and secure sys­tems. SCOP’s areas of inter­est are depend­abil­i­ty, secu­ri­ty and opti­miza­tion, and the inter­play between these three aspects. Areas of appli­ca­tion are in com­plex sys­tems and sys­tems of systems.

Research topics

Safe systems and secure systems

This research top­ic is con­cerned with man­ag­ing uncer­tain­ty in depend­abil­i­ty stud­ies, fault tol­er­ance, and the secu­ri­ty of infor­ma­tion systems.

  • Man­ag­ing uncer­tain­ty in depend­abil­i­ty stud­ies: apply­ing the lat­est advances in uncer­tain­ty the­o­ry to the field of dependability
  • Fault tol­er­ance: imple­ment­ing fault tol­er­ance in autonomous sys­tems (road vehi­cles, rail, and UAVs)
  • Secu­ri­ty of infor­ma­tion sys­tems: how this can be applied in vehi­cle net­works, sen­sor net­works, and more gen­er­al­ly in any field of appli­ca­tion where sen­si­tive data are present
  • Pre­dic­tive main­te­nance: opti­miza­tion in rela­tion to util­i­ty functions
  • Inte­grat­ed safety/security approach­es: imple­ment­ed in sen­si­tive com­mu­ni­ca­tion-inten­sive areas (such as « the fac­to­ry of the future » and trans­port networks)
  • Cyber­se­cu­ri­ty in high­ly inter­con­nect­ed sys­tems (Cloud, Inter­net of Things, etc.)
  • Sys­tem fault tol­er­ance based on arti­fi­cial intelligence

Communication systems

This research top­ic is all about com­mu­ni­ca­tions in con­strained net­works, whether con­strained by mobil­i­ty or by lim­it­ed resources in terms of com­pu­ta­tion, com­mu­ni­ca­tion, or ener­gy. Work relates to coor­di­na­tion and coop­er­a­tion between nodes, as well as the dif­fu­sion, shar­ing, merg­ing and acqui­si­tion of data.

  • Autonomous and ener­gy-effi­cient networks
  • Max­i­miz­ing the avail­abil­i­ty of net­works with lim­it­ed on-board energy

Optimization of systems

This research top­ic revolves around man­ag­ing a set of flows, using a net­work of resources to opti­mize a col­lec­tion of met­rics in a deter­min­is­tic yet uncer­tain environment.
